To set itself apart from Classic Rummy, Gin Rummy adds some special rules. By making valid melds and avoiding deadwood, or unmatched cards that don't contribute to any game cashmelds, players try to reach a set number of points, usually 100. When a player thinks they have enough melds to win the round, they can "knock," which is one of the main Gin Rummy strategies. Players who use knocking can finish the round early, but they have to make sure that their deadwood count is less than that of their opponent.
