  • Negreanu Weighs in on Chip Dumping Scandal
  • "The Sleaziest Promo I’ve Seen in 30 Years"

Daniel Negreanu has slammed ClubWPT Gold, a sweeps coin poker site, for running what he called "the sleaziest promo I've ever seen in 30 years bar none," following the $1 million bonus that sparked the chip dumping controversy in the WSOP Millionaire Maker.

In his latest WSOP vlog, Negreanu took aim at the ClubWPT Gold Rush promotion, which offered $1 million to any ClubWPT Gold member who could win one of eleven designated summer events. That bonus was crucial to the controversial heads-up finish that unfolded between Jesse Yaginuma and James Carroll, which prompted a WSOP investigation and left the bracelet unawarded.

Negreanu said the promotion was at best "incompetence" and has left a "black mark" that is bad for the game. ClubWPT Gold and the World Series of Poker are not affiliated with each other.

He also alleged that third-place finisher Josh Reichard was approached to make a deal and refused.

Negreanu Weighs in on Chip Dumping Scandal

Negreanu, whose popular YouTube vlogs chronicle his daily WSOP experience, expanded on the controversy, clarifying, "I don't blame the players one bit; they were put in a brutal spot."

The Canadian added, "Apparently, one of the guys... was facing severe financial hardship, just trying to get back on his feet. Had about 10 mins to decide on what to do here, was given this opportunity, took it, from what I heard, he now regrets making that decision."

"You put these people, who want to win a bracelet, I know that James [Carroll] wanted to win this bracelet, but he's now put in this difficult situation."

Negreanu also revealed that he had heard from sources that "The third-placed finisher [Josh Reichard] was also approached, and didn't want to take part."

"The third-placed finisher was also approached, and didn't want to take part."

"Clearly, the evidence shows it may have [affected the other participants]," said Negreanu. "The other two have a deal in place, this guy in 3rd doesn't wanna do that, so they both have an incentive for him to be eliminated... Either consciously or subconsciously, it can affect the play, I'm not saying it did, but it could."

The seven-time WSOP champion called the heads-up battle "a farce" and added, "I wish both players would have not even played... One of them just says I'm not feeling well, I'm going home, I forfeit, and everyone would have known, but at least we wouldn't have had the farce we ended up seeing."

"The Sleaziest Promo I’ve Seen in 30 Years"

Negreanu proposed two possible explanations for the promo run by ClubWPT Gold, depending on whether the controversy was accidental or deliberate.

If unintentional, Negreanu said, "If you didn't know, if you didn't foresee this, there's an obliviousness there and an incompetence to what kind of black mark is this gonna create for poker, cos make no mistake that's what it did. ESPN wrote about cheating at the World Series. Who does that benefit? It doesn't benefit anybody in poker."

"It's the sleaziest promo I've ever seen in 30 years bar none."

If intentional, the Hall of Fame player was far more scathing."This promo... if they did this knowingly, knowing there'd be a controversy, and I don't see how you don't see it happening, it's the sleaziest promo I've ever seen in 30 years bar none."

"I don't think that's the kind of attention you want, I think everyone loses here, I do have empathy for the two players, even though they won a million dollars I have empathy for them, because they're not gonna be able to play the WSOP for I don't know how long."

Online speculation, not yet backed by an official statement, has suggested the players involved may be banned from future WSOP events. Stay tuned to PokerNewsfor further updates as this story develops.
