Keeping too many low-value cards instead of high-value ones is one mistake to avoid making. Low-value cards can restrict a player's ability to form teen teen pattisets and runs that total seven or multiples of seven. They are also less versatile. Tossing out expensive cards without thinking about how they might be used in later combinations is another error to avoid. Ignoring the cards that opponents are picking up and discarding is another common error.
