The origins of this game can be found in Conquian, a Mexican game that developed from the 1751 rummyth-century Chinese game Khanhoo. After spreading to Europe and the United States, rummy evolved into the variant that is played today. The word "rumbullion," which means "a great tumult or uproar" in colloquial language, is thought to have inspired the name "Rummy," referring to the lively and exuberant nature of the game.
